Agathi (Sesbania grandiflora)

The outstanding feature is its extremely fast growth rate, especially during the first three to four years. It has been viewed as a source of pulp for paper industry. Leaves contain 36 per cent crude protein. It is adapted to the moist tropics with annual rainfall in excess of 1000 mm. Agricultural crops continue to grow well when intercropped with S. grandiflora whose open crown allows sunlight to pass.
